What Litigation Tells Us About the Dangers of IP Theft Network World (08/19/13) Burtt, Dave ; Closser, Donald A recent study commissioned by Symantec found that half of all departing employees retain confidential corporate files after being terminated. In addition, more than half of employees feel it is acceptable to move corporate data to personal devices, email accounts, or cloud services without prior company approval. Organizations should form a dedicated team composed of human resources, security, and legal professionals who collectively create policies, drive training, and monitor employees. Employees within these organizations will come to understand that stealing trade secret information is not only wrong but has serious ramifications. To legally claim IP protection, laws require companies to deploy reasonable measures to protect trade secret data, such as strict non-disclosure agreements, password security measures, limiting access to confidential files on a need-to-know basis, and physical security measures such as visitor sign-in sheets and a secure room for storing confidential files. Implementing a data loss prevention solution is also vital.
