What MLK day means to me: Growing up in Northern California - TopicsExpress

What MLK day means to me: Growing up in Northern California segregation wasnt on my radar. I went to school with kids of all races, and we were all the same. Since Ive moved to Little Rock I understand it so much more. Ive interviewed African Americans who picked cotton as children, who went to segregated schools, who couldnt drink from the same drinking fountain as white kids. I work with inner city teen moms and I see how generations are still being impacted. Its hard for people to truly break free from the chains of the past when its all theyve ever known for generations. I go to a multi-ethnic church where elders, deacons and prominent church members admit theyve been followed in stores and watched while they shop. Whove had to tell their kids to keep their hands on the steering wheel when being pulled over by police. And whove lost members of their family because of murder and violence on the streets. Ive adopted from the foster care system and Ive heard that the hardest children to place are African American boys. How sad is that! Theyre beautiful children who need a home, just like every child. (John and I have told DHS that were open to any race!) I used to think segregation was a thing of the past, but now I know differently. I learned from my pastor Mark DeYmaz that Sunday is the most segregated day of the week. Why do we feel we have to worship God separately when Christ came for all men and women? Martin Luther King Jr. had a dream, and our generation needs to continue to do what we can to bring this dream to reality. We still have so far to go. Our skin and our heritage may be different, but we are all children of God, created in HIs image. And in heaven we will stand before the throne together, lifting up Gods name! May we do our part to create a world where it is on earth as it is in heaven--unified. How? Be a good friend, and a good follower of Christ, by loving others as God does ... no matter their race. As we love others, the love of Christ will be seen in us, just as it was seen in Martin Luther King Jr. Something to think about today!
