What Michael Porter says about corporate social responsibility Michael Allan McCrae | November 14, 2014 Mining To reduce the risk of having a large project scuttled by local activists, Michael Porter says companies must move beyond community relations and start aligning business interests with local needs and priorities. Porter , a business professor at Harvard University, is a leading authority on competitive strategy. He contributed to the FSG research report Extracting with Purpose, a year-long study released in October. Porter says that just filling a community wish list does not work. The loudest voices in the community will see requests met, while deeper opportunities for business and community alignment will be missed. The root causes of community strife are lack of economic opportunity, poor health, lack of effective local or national governments, and environmental degradation, writes Porter in the studys forward. Companies must tie community prosperity to the present long-term needs of the business in areas such as qualified labor pool, capable suppliers, and well-functioning community infrastructure.
