What: Press Conference for the St. Francis Dam National Memorial and National Monument Where: Tesoro Adobe Historic Park (Tesoro Del Valle AKA the Harry Carey Ranch) 29350 Avenida Rancho Tesoro Valencia, CA. 91354 Date: August 19, 2014 Time: 9:00 AM History: It was the second greatest tragedy in the history of California. It was the rise and fall story of one of the most prominent figures in Los Angeles history. It was an integral part of the legacy of the search for water in a semi-arid Southern California which allowed a sleepy pueblo of 5000 people to grow into the metropolis of the present. Thirteen years after the completion of the famous Los Angeles Aqueduct, the St. Francis Dam was built to hold a years supply of water for the rapidly growing residents of the City of the Angels. Soon after it reached capacity, it broke on March 12, 1928, sending a 140 foot high wall of water down San Francisquito Canyon and the Santa Clara River Valley, killing hundreds of people on a 55 mile path of destruction from the Santa Clarita Valley to the ocean at Ventura. Finally after 86 years, this legislation will memorialize those who died that night, preserve this important part of our history, and provide an educational opportunity to visitors from around the world. The first photo was taken in the 1920s of the Harry Carey Ranch Store Trading Post that was run by Navajo caretakers. The St. Francis Dam Flood wiped out this store and the caretakers as the water passed by the Rancho. The second photo is Harry Carey at his Rancho with his dog and donkey C. 1920
