What This Democratic Senator’s Husband Did Proves How Corrupt Washington Is JAMES BEATTIE — SEPTEMBER 26, 2014 A company co-owned by the husband of North Carolina Democratic Senator Kay Hagan, who is embattled in a tight re-election campaign, received close to $400,000 of federal stimulus funds in 2009. JDC Manufacturing, co-owned by Chip Hagan, the husband of Senator Kay Hagan, received about $390,000 in federal grants for energy projects and tax credits created by the 2009 stimulus law, according to Politico. The stimulus vote was one of Hagan’s first after defeating Republican Senator Elizabeth Dole in 2008, and the Arlington, Virginia based publication reports that financial disclosure statements show the Hagans’ income from the company went from less than $201 in 2008 to almost $134,000 in 2013. Company representatives assert the disparity was because of increase in rental income, and Hagan’s campaign denies that the Senator aided her husband in securing the stimulus funds in a statement to Politico. Campaign Spokeswoman Sadie Weiner amplified the point, telling the publication Senator Hagan consulted with veteran Democratic attorney Marc Elias for guidance. “Kay is not involved in her husband’s business and had no part in helping JDC apply for or receive these grants…Her only involvement was when she made sure that a respected ethics attorney was consulted to ensure that it was appropriate, and the attorney found that it was.” Hagan narrowly leads Republican challenger State House Speaker Thom Tillis in a poll conducted last week by High Point University, 42 to 40 percent. In 2010, Tillis voted for a measure allowing North Carolina to participate in the federal renewable energy tax credit program. This benefited a bank in which he owns at least $50,000 in stock. Like Hagan, Tillis denies any wrongdoing, Politico reports. ……...
