What We Need In the PCA Are Field Experts & Their Prompt & Proper Action Against CSI! Before Coconut Leaf Beetle [Brontispa longissima], one of the most damaging pests of coconut and other palms, and now, the Coconut Scale Insect [Aspidiotus sp. Signoret], another equally serious ad notorious pest of coconuts. The use of only botanical insecticide is advised especially if we consider health of consuming public.This should be able to lower down the CSI population in the field; observe timing and application methods to protect CSI’s natural enemies; and avoid environmental contamination to protect human health and economic viability of the enterprise. Then, biological predators and parasites such as coccinellid beetles, lacewings, and parasitic wasps should be adopted for a long-term solution for this pest. Being the agency concerned on coconuts and the welfare of coconut farmers, the Philippine Coconut Authority [PCA] sees to it that its field personnel are really experts, I meant, Licensed Agriculturists, on coconuts and their pests and must fast-track the mitigation and action of the pest infestation to slow down the rate of infestation and to allow the recovery of severely damaged palms.
