What a POWERFUL weekend..!! The gathering, at Howard University, of the National Black United Front (NBUF) was more a Rite of Passage, than a conference. It was a convening...a coming together for a common purpose, the recognition, acknowledgement and celebration of THIRTY FIVE YEARS of BLACK EMPOWERMENT and SELF DETERMINATION. It was a passing of the torch to the generation of Youth who have ASSUMED the mantle of conscious leadership that is more about BEING BOUT IT, than merely just complaining and talking bout it. It was the Youth who called upon the Elders, who then called forth the Most Worthy Ancestors....ESPECIALLY those who worked in NBUF..Baba Hannibal Afrik..Baba Imari Obadele..Mama Karen Elder..Baba Jitu Weusi..Baba Jedi (Jacob Carruthers)..Mama Achuta Bacar..Baba Asa Hilliard..Mama Nzinga Heru..Baba Chokwe Lumumba..Mama Malkia Brantua...(my apologies for any I missed) The presence of so many of the warriors (soldiers and scholars)...old gray heads who were in the streets in the 60s...who were on the front lines in the struggle for African-centered education in the 80s and 90s (yall remember the Portland Baseline Essays)..going to the United Nations and charging the united states with GENOCIDE and, along with the National Coalition of Blacks for Reparations in America (NCOBRA) issued the call for reparations..was sentimental for me as I am being FORCED to acknowledge my own transition into Elderhood...as so many of my friends and teachers make their transition...as we enter into the final phase of our restoration...the wehemy mesu...is at hand. Forward EVER...backward NEVER!
