What a courageous and compassionate person… Elias Dear, Thank you for your support and we need more of you to accomplish our mission! Blessings! Elias Ketema 05/21/2014 An Experience to Remember Working at Vision on Africa was one of the best experiences that I had in the three years I lived in Ethiopia. This experience gave me a positive impact on my perspective on helping the less fortunate. It also brought out many leadership qualities in me that I thought I never had. Now I know how to use these qualities not just now but for the many years to come. At first I wasnt very interested in volunteering for community service. Waking up early every Saturday morning to go to VOA didnt sound very intriguing. I did not like wasting my spare time but once I began volunteering I realized it was far from a waste. I was actually doing something that benefited the lives of other people instead up of staying home playing video games or watching movies. The thought of that gave me a very good feeling. One of the first tasks I had to do at VoA was teach the women simple English and communication skills to help them sell their cultural pieces of artwork and accessories to their customers. I was surprised that such little transfer of information and knowledge could make a big impact on the things they sold. It helped them to be one step closer to making a decent living. My colleagues and I also helped with filing and record keeping which helped the organization to be more organized and allowed them easier access to files. Besides from what file management did for the organization, it also gave me many useful skills on being organized that I can now use. Another thing I learned how to do at VoA was pottery. At first I was horrible at making my artwork but the skillful women of VoA guided me through it and eventually I got the hang of it. I greatly appreciated the new skill they taught me. We also had leadership and business orientations which helped us to be better in our marketing skills and leadership qualities. One of the many things I love about VoA is that not only do I gain the pleasure from helping people but I also gain information as well. The president of Vision on Africa, Senedu Araya-Sellassie, is a woman I admire very much. Running a non government organization is not an easy task but yet she is able to continue and strive for her mission which is to make a measurable impact on the lives of women, children and the youth. I’m glad I contributed to her mission by volunteering at Vision on Africa and I hope many others could do the same. You definitely won’t regret it! Elias Ketema 05/12/2014
