What a crazy day! Laurel started her day as she usually has - TopicsExpress

What a crazy day! Laurel started her day as she usually has been-- like a rock. During rounds, her nurse asked if she could start to bottle feed a little because shes so interested in food and sucking on things. Her doctor approved it and asked about her stability. I explained that it seems her only issues these days are mechanical, or related to problems with her mask. I mentioned that I didnt think there was an alternative to it. He responded with Why dont we just take her off of CPAP? He said he was going to put her on low-flow nasal oxygen (no pressure support), and I honestly thought he was kidding! It was an incredibly dramatic drop in support, but she seems to be handling it quite well. But after her bath, we tried it, and with the exception of a couple low oxygen moments and a couple bradys, she did amazing. Her doctor came by and even told me that he thought she was doing well. He said that if she needed it, we can step up her support, but that he doesnt think she will need it. She snuggled with me for three hours. She did very well. She was incredibly active all afternoon-- she seemed thrilled to not have the CPAP on anymore, and she was just happy to be able to move around. In spite of that and the removal of all of the CPAP paraphernalia, she still managed to gain weight-- 20 grams, putting her to 1850 grams, or 4.08 lbs. She should move to a crib tomorrow at some point. They had to step up her oxygen a wee bit this evening, but when they did that, she ended up doing very well. Prayers: Pray for increased stability and that she can maintain on the level of support that shes receiving. Pray for those lil lungs to keep going and get stronger. Pray against bradys and for good oxygen levels. Pray for her to continue to grow and gain weight. Pray for her to learn to eat, too-- a new focus. Pray that shes able to avoid the bradys that often come with eating. Pray for us to be patient-- especially as we start moving toward a more stable state. Going home has never seemed so close or so far away. Thanks for your prayers!
