What a great Evening Stars Toastmasters meeting last night! We - TopicsExpress

What a great Evening Stars Toastmasters meeting last night! We started by voting in a new member, LaSalle Smith, and learning what he expects to achieve in Evening Stars. We also welcomed guest Bill Brevard. We continued by awarding Joyce Feustel her FIFTH DTM Award, the highest award that can be earned in Toastmasters. (See her page for additional information.) This is Evening Stars second DTM for this Toastmasters year (since July 2013). Next, we had an Educational Extra that spotlighted the new Toastmasters magazine app for i-devises (other platforms coming soon). Our Toastmaster of the Day, Danielle Edmonds, picked a different sort of theme, based on inspiration from the latest Toastmaster magazine: Refusing to Get Off Your Soapbox. She was so prepared with intro information and transition discussions, AND she came with her own soapbox! The word of the day was picked by crammarian, Kathleen Schulz, and was sophist: one skillful in devious argumentation. It was a challenging word to use, but Evening Stars members used it or a variant of it multiple times. John Donicht gave an inspirational opener with some funny jokes inspired by Fall. He did use Danielles soapbox. Other roles were: Timer - David Lampe; General Evaluator - Dennis Ryan; Vote Counter - LaSalle Smith (who introduced $1 cups to help collect the voting slips! Great, simple idea!); Ah-Counter - White-Eagle Perry; Leadership Evaluator - Cynthia Thorstad. There were three speeches given: Beth Boaz effectively discussed Reclamation and the 2013 Colorado Flood, which included a skillfully-handled 10 minute Q/A session. David Harrower relayed his research into direct market advertising on the internet. Mitch Krayton gave a speech about two spices. Mitch won best speaker for the meeting. These speeches were evaluated by Bob Baxter, Robert Case, and Lavie Gallegos, respectively. Robert Case won best evaluator! Table Topics was lead by me, with questions about the meeting theme and word of the day. Diana Hall talked about how she uses social media to give voice to issues, namely truth for her. Larry Scantland answered a question about when he refused to get off his soapbox. Linda Rhea responded to Describe a time when you were a sophist. Finally, Luc Moens responded to a quote from the October Toastmaster magazine: Everything good in life begins with talking with each other one-to-one. Luc won best Table Topic Response. Keep up the fantastic work! Next meeting: Wednesday, October 30 at 6:55 at our usual meeting place near I-25 and Speer. Please dress up in costume. A pot luck will happen prior to the start of the meeting. Happy speaking!
