You can play any unknown (to you) song from any number of guitarists and they can be identified by their sound and style - Eddie Van Halen, Ritchie Blackmore, Yngwie Malmsteen, and many many more - with distinctive sounds and styles. Nowadays? Indistinguishable. The 5-string bass is part of the reason, where any monkey can pound a B-string and every song written in the key of B or C and no real skill is required. But, I see a lot of younger people re-discovering older bands, and Im glad they recognize the difference, so all is not lost, just yet. The only reason people talk fondly about it today is because of the garbage music that was put on it when they were impressionable kids. Yes they had the loud rock and roll sound but they did it to cover up the unnatural pops and hisses that resulted by vinyl. Nostalgia is nice but lets not get carried away with it. Vinyl is vastly superior on proper equipment. Vinyl is an analog medium and we hear in analog. Think of the smooth waves of the ocean compared to a staggered castle parapet, this is the difference between digital and analog.
