What a great story. On occasion, friends and even family - TopicsExpress

What a great story. On occasion, friends and even family members have suggested Ill one day gets whats coming to me by taking candid photos of strangers. Perhaps. Though, by an equal and opposite perhaps, whats coming to me might not be exactly what cynics expect. There is a real value to documentary and crafted fine art photos. They are not captured or found. They are made. They also may not have an immediate apparent value. Rather, there is a social currency that emerges over time. Time can ripen these sorts of images, just as can happen in a long relationship where passion sweetens the years and turns them into another kind of love. What I understand from practicing street photography for years and by reading stories like this, is that there is a significant and very real value to candid photos extending beyond the obvious reason: a free and democratic society, to the individual enthusiasm that emerges from subjects when they find themselves pictured in such photos. Ive read a number of similar stores such as this from Vivian Maier, including photography those stories from greats like Fred Herzog and Jill Freedman. Ive also had my subjects respond personally to my photos and, more to the point, positively, to my pictures. For those of you not familiar with Vancouvers own Foncie Pulice, he has his own notable and well documented stories of positivity, from the personal to those of the greater community. Photographs are powerful all by themselves. They are even more powerful when they connect one own consciousness to their own mental predecessor. If you would like links to the aforementioned photographers, I would be happy to post those too. Lemme know. Read on.
