What a great time of fellowship yesterday was we discussed how the role of our Fathers affect/affected us. May The Lord heal and strengthen those of us who had negative affects of our fathers in our lives. I shared from my personal experience and how The Lord has healed and healing me. He is available to heal you right were you are at in your relationship with your earthly fathers. Its starts with forgiveness and keeping our eyes on Christ. As we discussed at times boundaries are needed. Jesus commanded us to forgive others but not necessarily stay in the circumstances. Today choose to forgive and ask The Lord for wisdom and keep your eyes on Jesus and watch Him heal and restore. May you rest in His healing grace and mercy! What a privilege to be surrounded in our fellowship by incredible dads that love Christ and are creating and leaving a godly legacy! Happy Fathers Day to Jim, Adam, Berry and Shane. May our Heavenly Father continue to anoint you with His heart as you lead your families in the way of Christ! *Below are my teaching notes from yesterday to bless and enrich you. -> Please invite a friend and plan on joining us next Sun. as we start the series The case for Christ, Faith and a creator. Shalom, Duane < -History of Fathers Day: source History On July 5, 1908, a West Virginia church sponsored the nation’s first event explicitly in honor of fathers, a Sunday sermon in memory of the 362 men who had died in the previous December’s explosions at the Fairmont Coal Company mines in Monongah, but it was a one-time commemoration and not an annual holiday. The next year, a Spokane, Washington woman named Sonora Smart Dodd, one of six children raised by her Father (a widower) , tried to establish an official equivalent to Mother’s Day for male parents. She went to local churches, the YMCA, shopkeepers and government officials to drum up support for her idea, and she was successful: Washington State celebrated the nation’s first statewide Father’s Day on July 19, 1910. Slowly, the holiday spread. In 1916, President Wilson honored the day by using telegraph signals to unfurl a flag in Spokane when he pressed a button in Washington, D.C. In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge urged state governments to observe Father’s Day. However, many men continued to disdain the day. As one historian writes, they “scoffed at the holiday’s sentimental attempts to domesticate manliness with flowers and gift-giving, or they derided the proliferation of such holidays as a commercial gimmick to sell more products–often paid for by the father himself.” In 1972, in the middle of a hard-fought presidential re-election campaign, Richard Nixon signed a proclamation making Father’s Day a federal holiday at last. Today, economists estimate that Americans spend more than $1 billion each year on Father’s Day gifts. -Biblical fatherhood and covenant God made with Abram. Genesis 12:1-4 Now in Haran the Lord said to Abram, Go for yourself for your own advantage away from your country, from your relatives and your father’s house, to the land that I will show you. And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you with abundant increase of favors and make your name famous and distinguished, and you will be a blessing dispensing good to others. And I will bless those who bless you who confer prosperity or happiness upon you and curse him who curses or uses insolent language toward you; in you will all the families and kindred of the earth be blessed and by you they will bless themselves. So Abram departed, as the Lord had directed him; and Lot his nephew went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he left Haran. -Abram changed to Abraham and covenant. Genesis 17:1-9 When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to him and said, I am the Almighty God; walk and live habitually before Me and be perfect blameless, wholehearted, complete. And I will make My covenant solemn pledge between Me and you and will multiply you exceedingly. Then Abram fell on his face, and God said to him, As for Me, behold, My covenant solemn pledge is with you, and you shall be the father of many nations. Nor shall your name any longer be Abram (high, exalted father); but your name shall be Abraham (father of a multitude), for I have made you the father of many nations. And I will make you exceedingly fruitful and I will make nations of you, and kings will come from you. And I will establish My covenant between Me and you and your descendants after you throughout their generations for an everlasting, solemn pledge, to be a God to you and to your posterity after you. And I will give to you and to your posterity after you the land in which you are a stranger going from place to place, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God. And God said to Abraham, As for you, you shall therefore keep My covenant, you and your descendants after you throughout their generations. -Sarai changed to Sarah. Genesis 17:15-17 And God said to Abraham, As for Sarai your wife, you shall not call her name Sarai; but Sarah (Princess) her name shall be. And I will bless her and give you a son also by her. Yes, I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of peoples shall come from her. Then Abraham fell on his face and laughed and said in his heart, Shall a child be born to a man who is a hundred years old? And shall Sarah, who is ninety years old, bear a son? -Jesus (Heavenly) Fathers first public affirmation. Matthew 3:16-17 And when Jesus was baptized, He went up at once out of the water; and behold, the heavens were opened, and he John saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on Him. And behold, a voice from heaven said, This is My Son, My Beloved, in Whom I delight! -The Fathers will/orders for Jesus and their relationship told by Jesus. John 10:14-18 I am the Good Shepherd; and I know and recognize My own, and My own know and recognize Me— Even as truly as the Father knows Me and I also know the Father—and I am giving My very own life and laying it down on behalf of the sheep. And I have other sheep beside these that are not of this fold. I must bring and impel those also; and they will listen to My voice and heed My call, and so there will be they will become one flock under one Shepherd. For this reason the Father loves Me, because I lay down My own life—to take it back again. No one takes it away from Me. On the contrary, I lay it down voluntarily. I put it from Myself. I am authorized and have power to lay it down to resign it and I am authorized and have power to take it back again. These are the instructions orders which I have received as My charge from My Father. -The Father and Jesus are one. John 10:30 I and the Father are One. 38 But if I do them, even though you do not believe Me or have faith in Me, at least believe the works and have faith in what I do, in order that you may know and understand clearly that the Father is in Me, and I am in the Father One with Him. 1 Corinthians 8:6 Yet for us there is only one God, the Father, Who is the Source of all things and for Whom we have life, and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through and by Whom are all things and through and by Whom we ourselves exist. 1 John 2:13-17 I am writing to you, fathers, because you know Him who has been from the beginning. I am writing to you, young men, because you have overcome the evil one. I have written to you, children, because you know the Father. I have written to you, fathers, because you know Him who has been from the beginning. I have written to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the evil one. Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, (the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life), is not from the Father, but is from the world. The world is passing away, and also its lusts; but the one who does the will of God lives forever. 1 John 3:1 See how great a love the Father has bestowed on us, that we would be called children of God; and such we are. For this reason the world does not know us, because it did not know Him.
