What a nice response from my senator. I advised him I have printed his words to see if they will feed my family and wished him luck in the next election. I truly hope he is unemployed soon. Dear Mr. Fletcher: Thank you for contacting me about the operations of the federal government. I understand the importance of funding programs that support our national defense, protect our borders, and care for our veterans and I appreciate having the benefit of your comments on this important matter. In order to avert an unnecessary government shutdown the House of Representatives passed several reasonable interim funding proposals. Each one represented a compromise and would have fully funded the government through December, maintaining current spending levels. Unfortunately, the President refuses to engage and Senate Democrats even declined an opportunity to negotiate when the House of Representatives requested a conference committee. Instead, they are determined to continue a shutdown of the federal government rather than work with Republicans to compromise. The American people deserve better than this lack of leadership from the White House. A government shutdown creates further uncertainty and instability in the economy. I am eager to end the shutdown and move ahead with the fiscal and economic reforms our country so urgently needs. Excessive government spending dampens job creation and stalls economic growth. Congress and the President need to implement the spending cuts and structural entitlement reforms necessary to strengthen the long-term fiscal integrity of our country. Every dollar borrowed today means higher taxes tomorrow. At a time when Texans are tightening their belts, Congress must reign in Washington’s runaway spending. Our national debt exceeds $16 trillion—making it larger than our entire economy—and it has increased by more than 50 percent since the beginning of the Obama Administration. We spend more than $30,000 per household and borrow almost 23 cents of every dollar. With today’s unsustainably high deficits and with more than $100 trillion in unfunded liabilities hanging over us, our toughest fiscal decisions cannot be postponed any longer. I am honored to represent Texas in the United States Senate, and you may be certain that I will keep your views in mind. Thank you for taking the time to contact me. Sincerely, JOHN CORNYN United States Senator 517 Hart Senate Office Building Washington, DC 20510 Tel: (202) 224-2934 Fax: (202) 228-2856
