What a pleasure this trilogy is. The pacing, the writing (by David Hare) and the acting are superb. And what a cast: the always rewarding Bill Nighy stars, and supporting actors include: Rachel Weisz, Michael Gambon, Tom Hughes, Ralph Fiennes, Judy Davis, Helena Bonham Carter, Rupert Graves, Winona Ryder, Christopher Walken, Ewen Bremner and Felicity Jones. In particular, Ryder and Walken deliver their best work in years. These are espionage and mystery tales (Agatha Christie and Raymond Chandler provide perhaps greater plotting influences than John le Carré) that bear down hard on how reprehensible the practice of torture and murder by Western democracies has been in recent times. Somebody should pay, but they never pay enough.
