What a surprise!!! The football displayed yesterday by Sewe Sport FC (Ivory Coast) against Nkana FC (Zambia) in the Orange CAF Champions League was exceptional! The Ivoirians won 3-0 but it was the way they’ve played football that made their performance so remarkable. A youthful team of impressive ball skills and fluent mobility expressing liberal tactics with strong individuality in all departments. No typical West African ‘big size and physicality’ trademark – some players are short, extremely quick while dealing arrogantly with their opponents. Nkana’s players would tell you that their biggest frustration and sometimes despair came from chasing the ball as their superior opponents maintained strong play dominance by changing directions with variations of pace, intelligent possession and decisive creativity. It was so rewarding to see defenders capable of taking their opponents on with such ease and efficiency or sharing the playmaking function. The match commentators (Supersport) called it ‘exhilarating football’. I call it ‘African Style’ – perhaps not yet maximized but still distinctly attractive and successful. It was a football lesson, especially for Southern African football, where dogmatic coaches use ugly football as the reason to get ‘the result’. Good luck in the semi-finals, Sewe Sport!
