What a week of highs and lows. Only a couple of days ago we were celebrating my sisters wonderful news that the Queen has appointed her Deputy Lieutenant of the County & City of Bristol. And this morning my father dies. I am so glad he was so proud of my sister Jane. And my brother Brian. For both being such decent and hardworking people. And most of all my beautiful daughter and his much adored granddaughter Sabeth. For being his Sunshine. He was a strict but thoroughly decent father who always put his family first. He was a rebel and an adventurer who saw the world, challenged authority and earned the love, respect and loyalty of those who knew him well. After 25 years in the army he went on to live and work in Brunei ... then on taking early retirement, reinvented himself as an aged-hippy doing VSO in Sri Lanka. I only have a few photos of him here in Bahrain ... I am flying home tonight and will, no doubt, find more. I feel strangely peaceful. We said our I love yous after every phone call. And that, I believe, makes a difference. We will all lose someone we love. The important thing is to let them know you love them before its too late. No regrets. A life well lived. A man well loved.
