What a wonderful week end we spent at Tyler, Texas for the annual reunion of the 300th Engineer Combat Battalion. We had the pleasure to meet 8 veterans of the 300th Eng, several family members and also relatives to soldiers killed in action on the LST523 june 19 1944. I bought 4 years ago a military bag who belonged to Pvt Servando Gonzales, 300th Engineer Combat Battalion who was killed in action on the LST 523 and also Thomas L Cobb from the same Battalion but from an other company. Servando probably let the bag in England before he went aboard the LST523, thats explain why an other soldier used the bag after his death. I contacted Brad and Jane who had made an incredible work about the 300th Eng in order to know more about these two soldiers. Have a look on their website. 300thcombatengineersinwwii/ I had the opportunity to interview Don Richter (B Company) yesterday morning, he was Line Combat Engineer and Clerk Typist. Now I plan to interview Chuck Bice (C Company) next week and also Bill Byers (A Company) in Oklahoma next January. There are so many things to say about this week end and about what these men did 70 years ago, I am just going to share some pictures and a summary of the 300th Engineer Combat Battalion History.
