What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death? Romans 7:24 Wretch. The word itself sounds so unlovely - certainly not a term that anyone would choose to describe himself. Focusing so much time and attention on our outward appearance, in an attempt to have beautiful skin, hair, and body, we balk at the thought that someone could consider us despicable. Yet because of the deceitfulness of our hearts, the term wretched describes us quite accurately. Our outer personae is a glossy cover to a heart that may harbor pride, selfishness, envy, hatred, unforgiveness - and more. Yet our maker can see beyond our facade to the black marks of sin within. But because of His love, Christ provided a way to save us from ourselves. Although wretched in heart, humanity to Him was worthy of His sacrifice. Our sin stains are washed away by the blood of Jesus, shed to cleanse the very hearts that chose to wander from Him. How humbling that is! In His compassion, He took on the unlovely heart and has found it lovely. From Amazing Grace by Jennifer Hahn
