What an amazing grand finale to the India Medical Team clinics. With a total of 366 patients seen today, 197 of them were sick and needed the care of the providers for diagnosis and then to our pharmacy for more education and medicines, many of which were life saving. For the other patients and even those presenting with an illness, community health education was again the primary focus of the clinic and the sustaining component of IMR. Young girls in India come pouring into clinic that are pregnant or have children on each hip. They humbly present their children to our team not knowing any real method of family planning. In talking with these young girls, most have absolutely no understanding of family planning, when they are most and least likely to get pregnant. When we help these girls to understand their family planning cycle, a light bulb comes on and it is incredibly powerful to watch these young girls come out of their shell and understand their bodies and feel empowered enough to take control of what is happening with they cycle and their reproductive system. Today, our community health education team was empowered to bring life changing knowledge to these young girls. The classes were such a huge success that girls literally ran to the principal of the school and begged for these materials to be put into the coursework for not only the current students but for all future students coming to this school. Fertility awareness with these young girls has now empowered them to understand their own body – to plan or prevent pregnancy – to open up discussions with their spouse about planning the future for themselves. They face many of the same questions we do here – how will we manage – how can we plan our future. Watching these girls come out of their shells and feel empowered about their life and their future was success beyond measure for our team. The team ventured the countryside to their hotel via the authentic bus ride through the typical Indian traffic and all of the excitement that comes on the Indian roadside.
