What an emotional week! Derek came into the final home stand - TopicsExpress

What an emotional week! Derek came into the final home stand following a hard September at the plate. But, with the first game against the Orioles, he found his stroke, had an HR in his first AB, and followed that with four straight multi-hit games. But, as emotional as i was i held it together. Then the miracle of Thursday night, the return of the Ghosts, and Yankee Magic in excelsis, and i was just thunderstruck. Somehow, i held it together. These last three games in Fenway against the Sox seemed like a bit of an afterthought, but Dereks respect for the Game, the Rivalry, and the Boston fans compelled him to make the trip and DH (he would not play shortstop, though, that ended in the Bronx - as it should have). Today was it, though. Two At Bats, one more RBI single, and he was done. Another emotional wallop, trying to get my head around the idea of no more Derek Jeter, Yankee shortstop. But still i kept it together. Finally, at the press conference, Derek answered all the questions - most weve all heard him answer dozens and dozens of times before. But, near the end, one reporter said to him that they all (the reporters present at the event) would be going upstairs to write the Legacy of Derek Jeter, and how would he himself write his own legacy, or what would he want these reporters to write. He thought about it, and finally he said, All i ever wanted to be was a Yankee. I wanted to be the Yankee shortstop. He took a breath and said, You can just say I was a Yankee. Thats all. That would be fine with me. I was a Yankee. There and then, I lost it. Goodbye DJ, best of everything. Thank you for making my life better. Thank you for your dedication to the Yankees, your understanding of the meaning of being a Yankee, and never representing us any other way than as the hardest working, and although not the most naturally gifted, but, for the better part of twenty seasons, the best baseball player in the Game.
