What an exciting game last night between your University Lions and the Blue Devils from Tunica Academy with a final score of 50-13. As I promised yesterday, the Lions delivered and they did so in an amazing fashion. It was obvious from the beginning of the game that Tunica intended to keep the ball on the ground and out of the hands of the University offense as the 1st quarter ended scoreless. BUT, the Lions got their chance early in the 2nd quarter and they took advantage of every possession scoring all 3 times they had the ball. Dez Eddie and Jeremiah Jefferson were the 1st to score for the Lions early in the 2nd followed by 1 of the only 2 scores of the night for Tunica and then Dez added another TD pass from Peyton Gauthier to go into the half with an 18-7 lead. The Lions kicked off to the Blue Devils to begin the 3rd quarter, but the Lions defense forced a 3 & out. The University offense went to work with a combination of a powerful run game mixed with the potent passing game the Lions have demonstrated many times. The end result; the Lions scored 18 more points in the 3rd quarter putting the game out of reach. Zach Rhone got the 1st TD midway through the 3rd followed by Dez Eddie on a run and then a beautiful 39 yard strike from Peyton Gautheir to Tyris Price. Dez Eddie added 2 more scores in the 4th quarter with some spectacular runs that put the game away for good and ended the night with a final of 50-13. Some offensive stats: Peyton Gauthier was 13/15 passing 170yds & 4 TDs. Dez Eddie was 8 for 135yds rushing, 2 TDs; 5 for 74yds receiving, 3 TDs; a punt return for 53yds and an INT return for 21yds. Total: 15 touches 283 all purpose yds & 5 TDs with 2 called back for penalties. Zach Rhone had 10 for 66yds & 1 TD running between the tackles against the largest team we have faced all year. He definitely earned his yards the hard way and was big for the offense. Jeremiah Jefferson was 3 for 85yds & 1 TD. Tyris Price had a beautiful 39yd TD catch. The defense was HUGE tonight for the Lions. They held Tunicas big backs to just 159 total yards for the game; 137 on the ground and a dismal 3 of 20 passing with 3 INTs. Most of those yards came in the 1st half as the Lions tightened the clamps on the Blue Devil offense surrendering just 42 total yards in the 2nd half. The defense was lead by Quincy Jefferson with 13 tackles, Cory Hampton with 11 tackles, Jon Kelly with 10 tackles, 1 QB sack and who could forget the extraordinary effort by the defensive front: Deondre Simon with his 2 batted down passes, Quincy Jefferson who lived in the Blue Devil backfield all night, Kaleb (Bear) Washington, Deontae Washington and last but certainly not least Richard Cumby who also had a batted down pass. Between Richard and Deondre they blocked more passes than the poor Tunica QB completed. At the end of the night, they truly were blue devils from the big hits the University defense put on our guests from the north. Alright folks, enjoy the weekend and celebrate the win because next week the defending Class A Champion #4 Trinity Episcopal Saints come rolling into the Lions Den with revenge on their minds. They beat a good Columbia Christian team last night 38-12 to set up a Semi-Final showdown with your #1 ranked University Lions. Never mind the win over Trinity in the 1st game of the season. As I reminded you 2 weeks ago, this is a new season where its win or go home. The Lions will have to play a near perfect game to get a win over a much improved Trinity Saints team. Make plans early to attend the game. I can promise you there will be nothing else in the Cenla area more exciting than watching the University Lions play the Trinity Saints in Wildcat Stadium next Friday. Mrs Loyd has declared this to be a Black Out game so lets get ready to cheer our Lions to victory and a date in the Championship game the following Saturday. See you there. Kickoff is 7:00pm sharp. GO LIONS!
