What an outstanding article! Yes, many police officers at some point in their career become cynical towards society. This is based solely upon the nature of the job and having little to no positive interaction with others. When you consider the fact they respond daily to situations that are beyond the control of others, regularly deal with death in various forms, and are oftentimes disrespected because of the authority they represent, a reasonable person would readily admit and understand that this lifestyle is simply not sustainable without making necessary changes. Unfortunately, these changes usually come in the form of rejecting or blocking out others who do not harbor the same mindset. This problem is too big for police departments to deal with on their own. Law enforcement agencies cannot resolve this issue without seeking outside help. It will take unwavering support from within the community, the justice system, and the government to win this battle. Inherently, most police officers expect to bear the brunt of societys burdens. Whats more, they will usually absorb it without complaint. However, I sincerely believe we are entering an era where the divide between public servants and the populace they serve is increasing at an alarming rate. Have we become comfortably numb to the values we hold dear? Silence is deafening and failing to take a stand for morality is cowardly. We must begin to hold ourselves accountable for past failures in order to plan for a better tomorrow. Similarly, we must hold others accountable for their actions, offer punishment and forgiveness, and then move towards bridging that divide. May God have mercy on us if we fail to heed the warnings weve been given!
