What are Optical fiber. Optical fibers are the light equivalent of microwave wave guide with the additional of very wide bandwidth. Physically an optical fiber is a very thin and flexible medium having a cylindrical shape. It consists of following parts: (1) Central Core: The core is the inner most section and is made of glass or plastics. this is the actual fiber and has the remarkable property of conducting an optical beam. (2) Cladding: The central core is surrounded by a transparent sheath called cladding. It is also a glass or plastics having optical properties much different from those of core. Ref. Index of cladding < Ref. Index of core. The thickness of cladding is one tenth of area of cross-section of core. (3) Insulating or Protective Jacket: The outer section is called the jacket made of plastic or polymer and other materials that is provided for the protection against moisture, absorption crushing and other environmental dangers
