What are YOUR intentions? By Imam Zia To my beloved youth (brothers and sisters): your good deeds (coming to the masjid, helping with charitable projects, attending lectures, etc) fall into one of these three categories: 1. To please your Creator. 2. No intentions. (Just jumping on the fun bandwagon.) 3. Evil intentions. (You are there to meet your Prince Charming or the little Queen of your Heart). Now reflect. If its #1 above, keep it up. If its #2, try to change it to #1 (to please your Lord). However, If its #3, do the following: (a) drop him or her like a bad habit (high school kids dont get married these days last time I checked, so whats your excuse for being infatuated with that one person who is just your friend?) (b) make sure your intentions are purified. This is hard work. Keep trying. Ask God to help you. (c) do us and yourself a favor and STAY AWAY FROM ALL OF THESE GATHERINGS/PROJECTS/LECTURES until you are certain you have corrected your intentions. The number of youth falling in love and using the masjid as their excuse to meet up is staggering. THIS MUST STOP! How timely, relevant and appropriate is the hadith of Intention/Sincerity in this context! Umar Ibn al-Khattab (ra), narrates that the Prophet (pbuh) said: ‘I heard the Messenger of God say: “The actions are only (and certainty) tied to the intentions and every person will earn that which he intended. Therefore, he whose migration [or coming to the masjid in our context] was for God and His Messenger (pbuh), then his migration will be for God and His Messenger; and he whose migration was to achieve some worldly gain or to take a woman in marriage [let alone just to be with that girl or boy], then his migration will be for that for which he migrated [and it will not only bring NO GOOD, it will be detrimental for his/her spiritual health and that of others).
