What are everyones opinions on shootouts? To be honest I think - TopicsExpress

What are everyones opinions on shootouts? To be honest I think they need to be eliminated and heres why: 1. Too many teams lose valuable points in the standings because they lose in a shootout. 2. Certain teams have more skilled or better shooters than other teams which is an advantage for that team. 3. Certain teams also have goaltenders who thrive in SO situations better than others and are therefore at an advantage. 4. Shootouts are fun to watch, no doubt, but when your team loses it is not fun. They are basically like a skills competition which is an unfair way of determining the winner of a professional hockey game. 5. They dont prove which team has been better throughout the entire game. For example, if it is a 1-1 game and you outshoot your opponent 50-10...the team who got badly outshot and played horribly still has a chance to win the game and gain the full 2 points simply because their goaltender stood on his head the entire game. 6. Hockey is a team sport, not an individual sport. The winner should be the team who scores the most goals at the end of the game by playing as a team, not who has the more skilled shooters or individual players. 7. Again, teams who simply have bad luck in the shootout could potentially miss the playoffs by a few points because of losing in shootouts earlier in the season. Feel free to add any more reasons why you think or dont think the shootout should be eliminated. Here is my new proposal: After 60 minutes of regulation hockey, have a 5-minute period of 4 vs. 4 hockey. If nobody scores then have a 5-minute period of 3 vs. 3 hockey. If no winning goal is scored after that 10-minute period, then the result would simply be a tie in which both teams would receive one point. That way it eliminates potential bias. Now I understand why this can be argued against; and the main point is the fact that players will be absolutely exhausted and dead tired and some teams who play on back-to-back nights will have to suffer by playing an extended amount of time. Let me know what you guys think. -Cherno
