What are signs of illness in parrots? Contact your vet if you notice this. Sneezing, scratching at the nostrils, crust on the nostrils or feathers around the beak. Clear mucus running out of the nostrils is a sign of a respiratory infection. These are very treatable if caught early. Another sign is audible breath sounds or puffing. Digestive problem symptoms are green watery poop (not related to the food colouring in some pellets). Whole seeds in poop in a sign of a very serious disease where the crop can no longer function properly. Protrusion of the vent region is a sign of prolapse or possible egg binding if the bird is straining and needs to be fixed asap. Balance problems such as being unable to perch or head tilting are signs of something very bad and you need vet care immediately. Any bird that normally perches seen sitting on the cage bottom and fluffed up is sick. Moulting normal feathers is NOT a sign of illness. Look at the feathers if they appear old and worn then it was time for them to fall out and be replaced. Sometimes birds have very heavy moults, usually every other year. Other times it is barely noticeable. Give your bird lots of protein during a moult and some probiotics to boost its immune system. Plucking feathers is a sign of imbalance, boredom, hormones, not enough light, the wrong foods, or possibly a subclinical infection such as fungal.
