What are some risks to body piercing? One of the most common risk is infection at the site. This could be caused by use of unsterile equipment, contaminated hands or inadequate preparation of the skin. Precautions should be taken to prevent infection and in keeping the area clean. Early signs of infection include: swelling, redness, warm to touch and pain. In most cases the site will heal without a problem. Some sites may require the use of topical antibiotics, and if the site becomes infected with symptoms such as an elevated temperature or discharge from the area, medical intervention may be necessary and systemic antibiotics may be ordered. There are other forms of infection that can be transmitted through contaminated equipment or procedures that the parents need to be aware of and to take measures to protect their children. Infections such as the Hepatitis B and HIV virus are transmitted through blood and body fluid exposure can be fatal. It is estimated that one third of the cases with Hepatitis B cannot identify a source for the infection. In addition, there are risks for scar tissue growing at the site, torn earlobes as the child pulls on the erring or other accidental injuries. Remember this is a simple yet invasive procedure that pierces the skin and exposes it to organisms or trauma. However, when properly done it can be beautiful!
