What are the rules of war? How are civilians protected during armed conflict? YPFP is happy to announce that in partnership with the American Red Cross (ARC), we would like to invite you to a special two hour course, Introduction to International Humanitarian Law (IHL), conducted by members of the ARC’s international legal team. This 60-90 minute course is designed to introduce international practitioners, such as Foreign Service Officers, USG civil service staff, World Bank employees, Congressional staffers, and members of the international media, on IHL issues. International humanitarian law (IHL) is a set of rules which seek, for humanitarian reasons, to limit the effects of armed conflict. It protects persons who are not or are no longer participating in hostilities and restricts the means and methods of warfare. The course will cover the two cardinal principles of military necessity and humanity, the framework of the Geneva Conventions and Additional Protocols, conflict classification, and distinctions between civilians and combatants. When: 11/13/2014 starting at 5:45 PM. The course will last 60-90 minutes. Where: American Red Cross, 2025 E St. NW Please note that this event is open to YPFP members only. Applications are due by 11/10/14, so RSVP today. Space is limited! ypfp.org/free_course_introduction_to_international_humanitarian_law
