What are the story wars? Do the myths matter to you and will you fail without enlisting their secrets? Im looking into these questions and have found some interesting answers. My journey is far from done, but Im here to offer you some initial observations. About two weeks ago, I went to a talk on how to give a TED Talk. (Ironically not given in TED Talk style) I had tried to do a TED-style talk about 2 years ago on a highly complex topic (using early versions of MS Azure) and I came away feeling that it was only minimally successful. At the How-To-TED talk, the presenter showed this short 4 minutes video, which relates the myth of the hereos journey to tactics and strategies for brands and brand marketing: https://youtube/watch?v=RPKzF2tFgfs If you read my stuff, and I hope you do, then you know that Im not a capitalist - Im a craftsmen. So I take things about branding skeptically and always try to dig a little deeper. The 4 minute clip really puts a bow on it. But, the 4 minutes clip is part of a larger talk on the entire making of the making of the journey. Im trying to take these theories of mythology, and break the bonds of group-think (newyorker/science/maria-konnikova/i-dont-want-to-be-right) that hold organizations down and keep them from simplifying (ted/talks/yves_morieux_as_work_gets_more_complex_6_rules_to_simplify?language=en). My specialty is software development so thats where Ill practice, but this journey makes one accutely aware that enlightenment is a universal challenge. On going...
