What are the two things that will determine how you will fight? The answer is SITUATION and ENVIRONMENT. If, while at the office, a man pulls a gun and starts to shoot people you have a situation. That situation, quite plainly, is an Active Shooter. However, just that alone does not determine what kind of self-defense techniques you will employ. You may be trained in gun takeaways, but if he is on the other end of the room capping rounds your techniques wont work in this situation. Therefore, the environment (your surrounds) will also determine what you are going to do. If you are at a distance from the massacre you may have to run away, get behind some cover, or whatever the environment affords you. No matter what fight you find yourself in, these two elements will always determine your course of action. If you are a traditional-based martial artist (karate, Tae Kwon Do, kung-fu for example) then youre probably not ready for the fight where a bad guy lobs a hand grenade in your direction. That is a fight, but it is a fight dealing with terrorism. Is a hand grenade a likely self-defense situation? It could be if you find yourself at an international airport or inside a busy metropolitan train station.
