What are we learning about next week? Froggies : Stop and go! Did you know? • We learn through our senses. • That includes the sense of movement. • Your child will find it easier to understand concepts such as `stop and go’ through moving his body. • Not only does movement activity help to develop concepts, it also promotes sensory and body awareness, which plays an important role in your child’s ability to gain meaningful information from his environment. Leapfrogs : Perception and the senses PERCEPTION – what is it? • The ability of the brain to interpret messages received through the senses. • The ability to sort, organise and put together the messages from the senses so that the appropriate responses can be made. The organs of perception are the eyes, ears, nose, tongue, and the skin. (Seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting and touching). The eye sees an object, but it is the brain that recognises the meaning of the object. When a child looks at a chair, his eyes will see it, but he will not know what it is unless the brain tells him what it is. The eye looks, but the brain SEES. In order to form concepts, all the senses need to be working well.
