What are you afraid of? We are all afraid of something. Some are afraid of spiders, some heights, some being alone, some fear financial failure, some are afraid of other people, and some like my wife are afraid of snakes. I am sure if we think about a fear or phobia we all know someone; maybe ourselves who are paralyzed at times by said fear. Fear is natural it is an emotion which tells us to be cautious; it can save our life or the life of others if used properly. Fears however, if it is allowed to can become a fire which consumes us; it can become an idol. Fear can cause us to deny the work of God in our lives. Sunday we looked at the story of Peter’s denial of Christ. I have often wondered how after all he had seen he could deny Christ. It is because fear had so consumed him. He has quit bowing down to Christ and is now bowing down to the idol of fear. I wonder if the woman who asked Peter if he was with Christ, ever came to know the Lord. Perhaps she was asking because she wanted to know more about Christ, maybe there was no real danger we will never know. What I do know is fear not only grips individuals but it also grips churches. Churches just like individuals can be sacred of people, “We don’t want to attract the wrong people.” Churches can be afraid of change, “We have never done it that way before.” But there is good news; if we are truly in Christ there is nothing to fear not even the gates of hell. So let me ask you one more time, what are you afraid of? “Lord, please give us the boldness to be the people you would have us to be; amen.”
