Its almost a forgotten part of Oamaru these days but it was where Oamaru had its European beginnings. Will the closing of this bridge mean anything to you? Oamaru bridge likely to close permanently A footbridge, located at the mouth of Oamaru Creek, is likely to be permanently closed and removed due to its poor condition. Assets Group Manager Neil Jorgensen said the bridge has been closed for some time to vehicles and a recent inspection by Council’s bridge engineer has advised that the bridge is no longer safe for any use. “Although the bridge looks strong the wooden piles are completely rotten and the abutments that the concrete deck is sitting on are also in poor condition,” says Mr Jorgensen. “We do not want to put anyone in danger and the bridge is no longer safe for any type of use, even by people out walking.” Council is not planning to replace the bridge with a new pedestrian bridge, estimated to cost $120,000. However, anyone could submit to Council’s Long Term Plan requesting a replacement be considered. Public submissions on the Long Term Plan will be called for in early 2015.
