He acknowledged that there is a tension between the goals of keeping English as the lingua franca while encouraging people to speak Mandarin. We want to maintain a common space where everybody uses English and feels comfortable, he said, adding that the way to strike a balance is to find suitable platforms to use mother tongues appropriately.
