Borough President James Oddo had requested that the Independent Budget Office conduct a study on ferry fare options for non-Islanders as the North Shore renaissance comes to fruition. The city office conducted a similar study in 2006, but Oddo wanted adjusted figures to account for the anticipated uptick of riders. While I am not pushing this concept -- and our request to IBO was simply a matter of getting an objective analysis as to how much money could be generated with the expected increase in out-of-towners using our ferries, said Oddo in a statement. I still dont see a groundswell for support for such an initiative, and that continues to be somewhat surprising to me. The study, which is on the IBO website, presents a scope for the next 15 years and includes two payment methods: the aforementioned, stand-alone ferry charge for tourists, and an implementation of the MTAs MetroCard system for all who live outside of Staten Island. The estimated revenue gathered in the study includes the installation costs of gates, turnstiles, and ticket vending machines. I still believe raising revenue from tourists from Italy and Indianapolis is better than raising an equivalent amount from more fees, fines and property taxes, said Oddo in a statement. ....................... (I dont know why, but I keep hearing the words of a past high-level GOP official say to me, We just want to be the ones in charge of the contracts. Yes, really.)
