What can I say about Duane L. Bliss? At first I didnt like him much, after all he raped Lake Tahoe of all those beautiful first growth trees didnt he? Hmm! not so fast, we cant really hold him to todays standards. Back in the 1800s there was nothing here but wilderness and we all were not conservation conscience. I mean who knew? And we needed the wood. The TRPA would be up in arms. My God theyd have all our heads. So lets take a look at this visionary of a man. He was like in his sixties when he saw the lumber industry was finished. Most people are planning for retirement at that age, but this guy uses all his railway equipment from Glenbrook and Lake Valley to construct a railroad to connect Truckee to Tahoe, because up until then it was horse and buggy to the lake. So besides building the first railroad to the lake he built Tahoe Tavern the finest hotel on the west coast. He had already built the finest steam vessels on the lake. Hats off to Mr. Bliss, he made it easy to get to these most beautiful if mountains and lakes that we love so much. Automobiles were just a sparkle in the eye back then. What a fascinating individual this man was. I am utterly amazed at this Tahoe history that men like D.L.Bliss were involved in.
