What can we do? One thing, we can stop using price as the primary index when we purchase something someone has made. Labor costs money, and it should cost money. Sometimes bargains are real bargains: something costs less because its last years model or used or whatever. Sometimes our bargains are obtained at the price of others freedom. If you think you need to be paid well, extend the same principle to those who make your shirts and socks and furniture: insist that the stores you buy from be truly ethical in their supply chains; dont patronize stores that make cheapness their primary selling point; find out where things come from and how they get here. Most retail store websites have information on how to reach their corporate headquarters through email or phone. Use this to let decisionmakers know that you value others freedom more than bargains for yourself. Your honor is your true wealth.
