What do I love about Vallejo? Modern medicine. Because 97 years ago, before antibiotics and other medications, the influenza epidemic was wreaking havoc on Vallejo and other cities around the nation. In January of 1919, local health officials refused to allow Vallejo’s pool and billiard halls to re-open in an effort to stem the spread of the deadly flu in the city. Vallejo’s many theaters, saloons and places where people gathered in large numbers, were closed for weeks at a time. In mid-January of 1919, local health officials from Mare Island and Vallejo reported a decrease in the number of flu cases being reported. Officials at St. Vincent’s hospital reported within a 24 hour period, a total of 30 patients in the wards were being treated for influenza. From 1918 to 1919, more than 675,000 died as a result of influenza.
