What do I think of bodyweight training? A lot of popular - TopicsExpress

What do I think of bodyweight training? A lot of popular training systems (think of the DVDs you see advertised on TV) rely solely on bodyweight training. And as a result, I often get asked what my thoughts are on this particular type of training. The simple answer it suits certain clients in certain situations but is not the answer for everyone all of the time. Let me elaborate. If I have a strong and well conditioned client like Nikki below, using a bodyweight finisher that involves a series of lower body exercises can be very effective. However this style of training didnt dominate the hour we spent training last night. Nikki also performed lying leg curls, leg presses and heel elevated back squats, all of which using much lower rep schemes than in the video. To train an individual effectively I need as many tools as possible be it bodyweight training, barbells, dumbbells and machines. To expect a very unconditioned person who is completely new to exercise to perform a bodyweight circuit would be madness as they wouldnt have the stability or strength to perform this type of activity correctly. Most of my new clients have to learn how to work hard and safely using programs that involve a lot of leg curls, leg presses, pulldowns and machine rows. Once they have leaned out, got stronger and been taught how to move better under load they can graduate onto more complex things.
