What do diamonds, rubies, and fish have to do with hiring in small business? Probably a very good question! You know when you’ve found one and they are beautiful – but so, so rare. Why is it that so many employers receive abundant numbers of job applications but feel like they are sifting through rock trying to find that special person? It could be because they have inadvertently narrowed their hiring pool, and in fact they are on a search for a diamond, that is more like a search for the holy grail. In fact, they may not even need a diamond! When you are seeking a new employee, you want to cast the net wide enough that you attract the right people (no point fishing off the sand if you want to catch a shark – I’ll try to keep the analogies at diamonds and fish for now!), but not cast the net so wide that you attract every job seeker on the planet.
