What do the Pine Barrens, the Great Swamp and your drinking water have in common? Interested in showing how these things are connected? Join us for the next STEM Educator’s Series. What: Environmental Microbes and Their Metabolisms Who: Dr. Craig Phelps When: Wednesday, January 22, 2014 ~ 5:30 -8:00 PM EST Where: Rutgers University, Cook Campus, Institute of Marine & Coastal Sciences Building (71 Dudley Rd., New Brunswick), the Phillip Alampi Seminar Room Dr. Phelps, Faculty in the Department of Environmental Science, will discuss his work on environmental microbes and their metabolisms. He will discuss what biocomplexity is and how researchers grapple with it every day. The world of biocomplexity research encompasses the efforts of many different types of scientists all working towards a common goal, how living things interact with and affect the environment and each other. It is very hard to find a good definition for biocomplexity. It includes areas of biology, chemistry, engineering, oceanography, geology, microbiology, genetics, and ecology. Following the lecture we will share lesson plans related to environmental microbes, metabolism, and the iron cycle; as well as discuss how to bring these topics into your classrooms. Agenda: You will receive lesson plans, a light super (if attending in person), and a certificate of 2.5 professional development hours. You can participate in person or online. 5:30 – 6:00 pm: Check-in, Socialize, and Dinner 6:00 – 7:00 pm: Science Talk and Q&A 7:00 – 8:00 pm: Lesson Plan Demonstrations (by STEM Educator Team) and Educator Exchange To Register: Click on this link https://rutgers.qualtrics/SE/?SID=SV_4VMshVfEVh9ZD7f
