What do we do now with Weds evenings now that the Great British Bake Off is at an end?! Well done Nancy by the way! I know Norman got a bit of a snide comment from old Mr Hollywood about using Lavender for meringues .... but... It can be good. Whizz up a batch of old Yotam Ottelenghis meringues and before putting in the oven sprinkle over a few lavender flowers, some small flecks of gold leaf and a scant dusting of cocoa powder. Voila! Baroque Meringues. Vanilla pods speak for themselves- and these are beauties! Great in custard, ice creams, panna cotta, cakes and biscuits. Also put a slit pod in your sugar jar and as the sugar goes down simply keep topping up for divine vanilla sugar. Lovely story from Sorrel who was working for a gourmet food company one Christmas. She had an incensed customer on the phone complaining about the ash in his Creme Anglais! She obviously had to diplomatically inform him that the ash was in fact vanilla seeds!
