What do you all think about this: Today in class I learned that - TopicsExpress

What do you all think about this: Today in class I learned that the U.S. claimed Liberia (a small country on the Western coast of Africa) so that freed slaves could feel more connected to their homeland. Some freed slaves even went there after they were freed I think. Now this was in 1823 when James Monroe was president. They even named the capital of Liberia after him--Monrovia. Now a question that I would like an answer to is, why is it that even after slavery was abolished these slaves still stayed in the U.S.? Now, granted that they still would have been under U.S. rule because Liberia was claimed by the U.S., but wouldnt they have eventually become strong enough and most importantly, UNITED enough to rise up and over take Liberia and claim it for their ancestors once again? I guess Id like to know what stopped them all from leaving the United States and going to reclaim land that was essentially theirs in the first place? Id love to get opinions on this!
