What do you do when a beggar knocks on your car window at the traffic signal? Giving the needy 10 rupees does not reduce our wealth, but we sometimes withhold the alms for fear of encouraging begging or of the money being misused, for eg. used to buy liquor or taken up by goons who control the beggars. I have been thinking a lot but have done nothing until i realised a simple solution I could buy a dozen packets of biscuits, store it under my driver seat. And the next time a kid knocks at the car window, i hand over a pack without worrying whether my alms would be misused Moreover, goons who use beggars can only benefit from money- what will they do with biscuits, other than eat it themselves or give it to someone? This simple act will never encourage unnecessary begging. A person who is really in need of money will use it first on food. So by giving biscuits you ensure that the needy do not go back empty handed I recommend biscuits since they have a long shelf-life, are easy to keep in the car (they do not mess up your car interiors) and have carbohydrates and fat that are needed for a starving person. So go ahead and stop thinking. Always carry packets of biscuits in your car (if not car, your backpack or handbag) - you will get the blessing of feeding at hungry human beings. Your car will be a vehicle of barakah! And with such acts of kindness, in sha Allah, Allah may wipe away some of our sins.
