What do you do when your weekend plans get derailed due to being sick? Geek out on The Day of the Doctor - reading up on all the articles and videos online about the 50th Anniversary of Doctor Who, thats what! JFKs assassination had profound cultural impact, but for me and countless others the birth of the longest running sci-fi series has greater ramifications. The fictional character of the Doctor provided an archetypal hero for me to believe in and find comfort in. Part Sherlock Holmes mixed in with James Bond, Charlie Chaplin, Isaac Newton and Robin Hood - The Doctor, a time-traveling alien represented so many elements and emotions I myself felt growing up and still to this day admire. Ive been a Whovian since age 11 when I caught a glimpse on the tele of a giant dried up insect falling out of a closet onto the Doctors companion Sarah Jane Smith. I had a lifesize TARDIS Police Public Call Box built for me in high school so I could make some of my own movies (writing episodes where I was one of the companions along with pals Jeff Stefaniak and Ryan Porch). I had all the televised episodes recorded from IPTV onto VHS (until I donated them to another fan). My mother let me travel to England at age 17 (by myself for a few days before meeting up with a tour group) with a Doctor Who guidebook in hand of famous places from the classic series. I flew to Cardiff a few years ago to revel in the shooting location of the new series and saw John Barrowman walking his dogs as I arrived at the hotel. I love to hum the theme song in my head. And I like to travel through time and space on a regular basis whenever possible. So here is to 50 glorious years of Doctor Who and 50 more to come.
