What do you imagine Heaven is like? Infinite giggle fits while your favorite song loops endlessly? Surely not hanging out on a cloud playing a harp (perhaps if you are Phil Pearce). Pure bliss in the presence of the almighty, oblivious to the screams if your good-hearted atheist brothers and sisters as they burn in Hell? Worry-free, pain-free, excitement-free presence in the Holy of Holies? What kind of iron sculpture is wrought without intense heat and hammer strikes? What single pleasant experience can consciousness bear unceasingly for even a year, let alone an eternity? No. Heaven, if we must cling to such an archaic concept, must be at least as diverse, interesting, expanding, changing and chaotic as the universe itself. In fact, if the afterlife consisted of the body returning to soil, to be consumed by plants and eventually photosynthesize, floating through the ether to dance once more with the soul, which has joined with the cosmic energy of stars, to nourish the next generation, that would be infinitely more satisfying to me than a kingdom of gold-paved streets.
