What do you stand for?. This simple yet complex question proved difficult for me to answer. A lady who runs a Leadership Mentorship programme asked me. It took me quite a while to give a satisfactory answer to it. More often than not, people go about their education, work or initiate inspirational and well-thought out programmes aimed at community development. The biggest problem however has been that we are having a generation of leaders, academics, volunteers, youthful and energetic men and women who want to contribute to the development of our nation, but they are yet to identify their ideology. They are yet to identify their purpose in life. They are yet to clearly define their goals be it short term or long term. They are yet to cultivate a genuine value system to guide them in what they do. Taking a day as it comes is what they say. Following other persons goals is what they do. Being loyal to an individual is what the consider best and they way to achieve their life aspirations. But i wish to state that human beings should be loyal to ideals. Nelson Mandela was loyal to a freedom, equality and elimination of apartheid regime. Mother Teresa was loyal to the art of giving oneself to the society and making that small difference she yearned for. Martin Luther King, Malcom X and Rosa Parks were loyal to the destruction of racial segregation in the United States. Dedan Kimathi was loyal to an independent Kenya where one could own and develop their land and exercise their right to suffrage. It therefore behoves each an everyone of us to take time to identify what they stand for. One requires to vet his/her inner self to identify what contribution they seek to make in their families, community and the country at large. Without this, you will always find yourself doing something just because others are doing it or because you believe that it will work for you coz it worked for another person.
