What do you think? The point of disciplining a child when misbehaving is NOT to hurt the child, but it should be a teaching moment. I agree with the connect and re-direct approach. In those stressful moments when a child is really acting up, I think it is important for the parents to show that they are calm and they are in charge. Screaming, inappropriate use of time out, can certainly fire back. One point that I try to make with parents when discussing discipline, is that I do not believe there is one fits all strategy. Every child is different and every family is different. You know your child better than anyone else, and you know what works and what not. Use your instincts in a loving, nurturing way, and I believe that is al the Psychological Mumbo Jumbo you need.
