What does Nurse Advocacy look like? These are some of the activities ANA and FNA are doing throughout the year to put nurses issues before legislators. But as you read, please note who is doing the work, NURSES. Able bodies have to step forward to help carry nursings agenda. You CANNOT sit back and wait for the invisible THEY to do it. It is a team effort! Another successful ANA Lobby Day has come and gone and what a day it was--here’s a little recap of what nurses were up to on June 12, 2014: • Over 160 nurses in Washington, DC advocated on Capitol Hill for issues like Safe Staffing, Safe Patient Handling & Mobility, Home Health, Durable Medical Equipment, among others • Nearly 255 Congressional meetings with lawmakers and their staff • 400 nurses participated virtually • 900 letters sent to Congress and tons of Tweet and Facebook messages connecting nurses across the country with legislators We always say, when nurses talk, Washington listens. Well, last week, Washington heard us loud and clear. We connected and communicated with Congress and the fun didnt stop there! We also recognized three nurse champions. We gave Congressional Nurse Advocate awards to Senator Susan Collins (R-ME), Senator Barbara Mikulski (D-MD), and a Nurse Advocate Award to Justin Gill, BSN, RN. Did you miss Lobby Day but want to get involved? It truly was an outstanding day and we want to thank EVERYONE who participated in DC and online-- you made the day a success. Keep on advocating, Your ANA Government Affairs Team
